A Cup of Laughter
Craft a cuica [KWEE-kah], a Brazilian instrument that makes a laughing sound, with supplies around your house!
Supplies
- ballpoint pen
- paper cup
- thick string or yarn, 2-3 feet long
- 1 paperclip
- water
Directions
- With the tip of the pen, poke a hole in the bottom center of the cup.
- Poke your string through the hole from the bottom of the cup. Pull it through so a couple of inches of string remain outside the bottom of the cup. Tie that end of the string to a paperclip, which acts as a stopper.
- To play your cuica, dampen the string with water. Gently pinch and run your fingers down the string. To make it sound like laughter, drag your fingers down the string in short bursts, pausing briefly every few inches.
