A Chocolate Treat You Can Roll

Brigadeiro is a popular sweet treat in Brazil that’s easy to make. It’s like a chocolate truffle! Did you know many countries in South America grow cacao, the plant chocolate comes from?

In Ecuador, brothers Alex and David learned business skills in Compassion’s program. Today, they grow cacao and make their own chocolate bars! Selling chocolate helps them care for themselves and support their family. Yum!

Brigadeiro

Yields1 Serving

Adult help needed.

Ingredients
1 (14-oz.) can sweetened condensed milk
 3 tbsp cocoa powder
 1 tbsp butter
 Pinch of salt
 Chocolate sprinkles
Supplies
 Medium saucepan
 Whisk
 Rubber spatula
A silicone baking mat or lightly greased plate
 Optional: mini muffin liners
1

Put your saucepan on the stove and turn the burner to medium heat.

2

Pour the can of sweetened condensed milk into the saucepan.

3

Add butter, cocoa powder and salt.

4

Whisk to combine all the ingredients.

5

Bring the mixture to a low simmer.

6

Cook the mixture for about five minutes. Keep stirring the whole time so the mixture doesn’t stick or burn. It’s done when you can scrape a rubber spatula through the pan and see the bottom for a few seconds before the mixture covers it again.

7

Remove the mixture from the heat and transfer it to a silicone baking mat or lightly greased plate. Let it cool.

8

Once the mixture has cooled to room temperature, roll it into gumball-sized balls.

9

Roll the briagadeiros in sprinkles. You can put the finished ones in mini muffin liners to make them look fancy or to give as gifts.

Make it your own! Chocolate sprinkles are the most common in Brazil, but you could use colored sprinkles, shredded coconut, crushed nuts or even crushed freeze-dried fruit.
