Maracas
Kids in South America shake maracas [ma-RAH-kahs] to make music. Try this idea to make your own maraca from recycled materials in or around your home!
Maracas Craft
Supplies
(Adult help needed)
- Handful of sand, pebbles or seeds
- 2 clean recycled fruit cups or other recycled containers
- Hot glue*
- Jumbo craft stick or recycled ice cream bar stick
- Paint, glitter glue, stickers and/or washi craft tape
Assemble
- Put the sand, pebbles or seeds in one cup.
- Using a hot glue gun, glue together the open ends of the cups, leaving about ½ inch with no glue.
- Place a craft stick in the space you left between the cups, and glue or tape around the handle.
* Heavy-duty tape can be used in place of hot glue, but the maracas won’t be as sturdy.
Decorate
- Make colorful designs on the cups with your paint, glitter glue, stickers or craft tape.
- Let dry, and enjoy making music!
