Pawaret is an 11-year-old boy in Compassion’s program in Thailand. He has an unusual family member. In addition to his grandfather, mom, dad, two brothers and sister, Pawaret’s family includes a 6,000-pound elephant named Onemai!
Pawaret and his family live in a jungle neighborhood in Thailand. He rides Onemai and also helps care for her.
“Every morning, I’ll go with my father and sometimes my grandfather to see Onemai. I take her to the stream for a drink and a bath. Later, I bring her to the field close to my house to feed her. Then, I bring her back to the forest in the afternoon, where I have to be with her until evening.”
Fun Fact: The Asian elephant is the largest land mammal on the continent of Asia!
Do you want an elephant like Onemai? Now you can craft one! Here’s how to turn a recycled milk jug into an adorable Asian elephant.
Supplies
- empty 1-gallon milk jug
- marker
- scissors
- acrylic paint
- paintbrush/foam brush
- glue (hot glue gun works best)
- googly eyes
- decorations such as sequins, plastic jewels and stickers
- pompom
Step 1
Adult help needed. With a marker, draw a line around the middle of the milk jug as shown in the first photo.
Step 2
Cut along the line you drew. Then discard the bottom half of the milk jug.
Step 3
Paint the top half of the jug in any colors you’d like. Let dry completely.
Step 4
Glue on googly eyes on each side of the jug handle, which is the elephant’s trunk.
Step 5
Add any other decorations you’re using. We used colorful sequins to look like the beautiful jewels and sequins used in Asian décor and fashion.
Step 6
Glue the pompom to the top of the lid. Enormously cute!
