In Rwanda, there’s an awesome art style called imigongo (say “ee-mee-gohn-goh”). It’s been around for hundreds of years. And guess what? It’s made using cow poop! Artists mixed the poop with clay and ash to stop the smell and germs — phew! They swirled it into bold, geometric patterns like zigzags, spirals and diamonds. After it dried, they painted the design with colors made from nature, like red dirt, white chalk and black ash. The result was a striking piece of art!

Today artists still make imigongo art. It’s prized for being a special part of Rwandan culture! But put away your cows, Explorers! In this activity, you’ll create your own funky, joyful design inspired by imigongo — just using tape and paint, not poop!

Supplies

  • Watercolor paper.
  • Painter’s tape.
  • Watercolor paint.
  • Paintbrush.
  • Marker.

Optional: You can also do this activity by painting on canvas with acrylic paint!

Instructions

  1. Use painter’s tape to make a design on your paper. It will be easiest if your tape is in straight lines.
  2. Color in the shapes you created with watercolor paint. Use colors that make you feel joyful!
  3. Let the paint dry. Make sure it’s really dry. You might have to count to a million, read the rest of this magazine or leave your work overnight.
  4. Carefully peel the tape off the paper.
  5. Write a Bible verse or messages of joy or encouragement in the blank spaces.
  6. Hang your masterpiece and look at it when you need a reminder that God gives joy!

Need ideas of what to write?

• Use a Bible verse you love or one about joy.

• List how God describes you! For example: I am loved (Jeremiah 31:3). I am not alone (Matthew 28.20). I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
