Let's Go Fly a Kite!
Kites come in all shapes, sizes and colors — just like the kids who fly them! Children who live in poverty around the world make kites out of all sorts of materials they can find and recycle. For this craft, go on a walk or hike to see how many supplies you can find to make a kite! Then get your family to an open space on a day when wind is blowing and have a blast!

Supplies
- 1 paper or plastic bag (you could also use a sheet of newspaper)
- 2 straight sticks, one longer than the other
- Tape
- Strong string
- Empty toilet paper roll (or a plastic bottle)

Step 1
Cut your paper or plastic bag into a diamond shape. These will be the kite sail.

Step 2
Make a cross with the sticks, laying them on the back of your bag. This is your spine and cross spar. Tape the sticks to your bag VERY securely!

Step 3
Poke small holes in corners of the bag at the ends of each stick.

Step 4
Measure 2 pieces of string a few inches longer than your sticks. Tie the longer piece of string into the holes on the ends of your long stick, letting the string lay down along the length of the stick. Then repeat for the short stick, creating a cross with your strings.

Step 5
Cut a very long piece of string to be your flying line. Tie one end to the toilet paper roll or plastic bottle spool. Tie the other end to the place where your sticks cross. Wind the slack string around the spool.

Step 6
Cut and tape a ribbon tail to the bottom of the kite.

Step 7
It’s ready to fly! Go to an open space with your family on a day when wind is blowing. As the wind picks up your kite sail, release more string to let it fly higher and higher!
