Fold-a-Fish
Have you ever gone fishing? Some kids who live in poor countries go fishing to catch food for their families. Many sponsored children have parents who work as fishers. Sometimes they don’t catch enough fish in their nets to feed their children or to sell for money.
A sponsored boy in El Salvador holds up his catch while fishing with his grandma.
To “catch” this origami fish, you don’t need a rod or bait. All you need is a square piece of paper to fold. While you work on this craft, pray for families who fish for a living. Ask God to provide them with enough fish, just like Jesus did in Matthew 14:13-21.
Step 1
Start with a colorful square of paper. If your paper is white on one side, like most origami paper is, start with the white side facing up and the colorful side facing down. Aim a corner at you to begin.
Step 2
Fold the top corner to the bottom corner and make a crease in the middle of the paper so it makes a triangle. Unfold. Fold the left corner to the right corner and crease in the middle like you did before. Unfold.
Step 3
Flip over the paper. Fold the bottom edge to the top edge and crease in the middle. Unfold. Fold the left edge to the right edge and crease in the middle. Unfold.
Step 4
Notice how some folds stick up a little, like mountains, and some cave in a little, like valleys. Place your thumbs in the valley fold on the bottom, and place your fingers in the valley folds on the sides. Bring your thumbs and fingers toward one another. Flatten the paper along the folds into a triangle.
Step 5
Notice that your triangle has flaps. Fold one flap inward, passing over the center crease so a little “fish tail” sticks off the end. Crease, unfold, and then repeat with the other flap. Don’t unfold this one. Instead, fold your first fish tail over the new one. Turn it over and press down.
Step 6
Hey, that looks like a fish, right? You can draw on cute eyes or glue on googly eyes. Try making a whole school of fish in different colors and sizes!
